Academic Programs
Overview of the School Day
At UNMS our focus is to support our students in receiving a well-rounded academic education and supporting social emotional needs. Each school day, students attend two periods of humanities (ELA+Social Studies), math, and science. Throughout the week, the other courses vary including circles, computer science, music, Spanish, art, and wellness.
High School Level Courses
At UNMS, students have the opportunity to take Regents courses in science and mathematics. During the 8th grade year, UNMS students take Biology with corresponding laboratory activity to gain eligibility to take the Biology Regents. In addition, 8th grade students receive the Algebra 1 curriculum as part of the 8th grade schedule and can earn Regents credit from passing the exam.
Social Emotional Learning Programs
Social Emotional Learning is integrated both inside and outside of the classroom. At UNMS, students attend a weekly circles that integrates the Morningside Center Circles Curriculum. Students also take wellness classes that allow them to engage in structured peer mediation, develop life skills, and develop their self-expression.
ASD Nest Program
The ASD Nest Program provides a supportive environment for students on the autism spectrum in an integrative co-teaching setting. The program provides continuous education to teachers and staff to ensure students are supported in the classroom with sensory and communicative tools. In addition, students receive additional related services such as social development intervention, speech-language & occupational therapy, and counseling.
NYU Collaborative Projects
UNMS is proud to continue to partner with the Listening Project which aims to help students develop their curiosity by connecting with others. As a school, we have made it our goal to use these strategies to develop students in asking questions to engage in discussions across the curriculum.
Multi Language Learning
This program serves students who are speaking English as their second langauge. Through the work of our MLL and TESOL teachers, we provide students with access to coursework when English is not their first langauge. Our goal is to fade supports for full integration into the classroom. Students may receive push-in, pull-out, and consultation services to support them with learning English.
