Dr. Laura Peynado-Castro

Dr. P is the principal at UNMS. Originally from the Dominican Republic, she migrated to the United States at age 12 and was enrolled in the New York City public school system. After attending the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, she returned to the New York City DOE as a Science teacher in the Bronx. In 2007, she became an assistant principal at UNMS and was appointed principal in August 2008.

Dr. P believes that education plays a crucial role in the academic, emotional, and physical development of every child. As a former New York City public school student, she was taught and inspired by an amazing group of educators who instilled in her a passion for learning and a commitment to making a difference. Dr. P says that, like you, she is committed to work relentlessly to support an inclusive learning environment where each child is cared for and valued. She is committed to providing opportunities that promote collaboration between our UNMS community members because together WE make the difference!

She earned a doctorate degree from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Arts and a Master of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. P also served as an instructor at Teachers College for three semesters. She is happily married to Dr. Angelo Mastropasqua, her friend, college classmate, and confidant since 1998. She enjoys reading, traveling, sports, and running, especially when it involves raising awareness for a good cause.

Dr. Peynado-Castro has been a member of the UNMS community since 2007.
